It's Follow Friday #36

Yes, it's that time of the week again! It's Follow Friday which is hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read. The question of the week is:
What is one book that you would be nervous to see a movie adaption of because you think the movie could never live up to the book?

My immediate answer, without a doubt, would be Karen Marie Moning's Fever series as I really don't think that it'd be done justice--mainly because it'd require extremely good CG and an exceptional cast (and they'd probably cut out scenes, which always agitates me). I also don't think that Unearthly by Cynthia Hand would be done justice either--due to CG mainly. If painstaking detail was taken, I don't think I'd mind quite so much, but it really feels like--for the most part--movie companies are too busy trying to tweak it for a general audience to really maintain what the story was originally. I understand why they do it, but there are ways to keep things true to the books and garner a large audience without changing the storyline too much.

  1. I never thought about the amount of GC needed, but that's a good point. New follower!

  2. Definitely good call on the CG requirements. Although I have never read the Fever series, I did really love the Unearthly series and would hate to see it butchered by Hollywood as well. Thanks for sharing.

  3. I love your answer to this question! You're really right about the CG stuff, it can really make or break a film. I also know what you mean about studios changing the heart of the book, I was so worried about The Hunger Games for this reason and I'm glad they stayed true!

  4. I agree with you about Unearthly. I've got the feeling that I would be cringing at the first sight of the wings. Just don't know about that one. Great answers. :-)

  7. Hi there :) just hopping through.

I haven't read this book but, it must be hard to duplicate the feel a book gives you to the onscreen. It would be even harder if it needed a lot of GC.

    Here is my choice...

  9. I hadn't thought much about CG, but I think you're right. Bad quality special effects could easily ruin a movie for me - and probably take down my mental version of a magical world or whatever with it!

  10. I don't see the Fever series working on screen, either. But hey, maybe they'll surprise us all. ;]

  11. I'm not a fan of CG at all, mostly because when the movie doesn't have a high budget... well, it looks cheap. And to see our favorite book look crappy on screen, that hurts. So I understand you completely.;)

  13. Now that everyone is bringing it up, I am a bit nervous about the Darkfever movie. I just hope it's a good movie, and its well cast and scripted.

  15. CG can cause a lot of problems and it is even getting much worse with making movies for 3D. I don't know if I would mind Unearthly so much, it seems like it could be filmed in the same kind aspects of Twilight (dare I say it) minus the dingy blue filter.
