Dust Girl by Sarah Zettel

Callie's mother is dead set in staying in the small, dying town of Slow Run but living in the Dust Bowl has definitely taken its toll on Callie and even if her mother doesn't want to leave--in hopes that her father will return--Callie's ready to go. In a strange turn of events, her mother is taken from her in a dust storm and Callie learns that there's more to the world than first meets the eye; perhaps more importantly, she learns that she's a part of it.

This is definitely the most unique take on the Fae that I've read in quite some time and honestly? That's what made it so fun to read--I will, however, admit that Callie's voice took a little getting used to. You don't have to wait long for Callie's journey to begin and when it does? Well, that's when the real fun begins. You'll meet Jack, a runaway headed to California who ends up accompanying Callie on her journey as well as Shimmy, who I hope you'll like as much as I did. I think I really liked Baya's minor appearance the best though, as for some reason I found it to be rather funny--but maybe that's just my weird sense of humor talking.

I know I've already mentioned it, but the time period and locations coupled with the the Fae made Dust Girl unique and if you're looking for something a little different than your typical faerie related read, you might want to check this out. On top of that, I love how music was incorporated into the magic and how wishes were used--this will make sense once you read Dust Girl, I promise. The focus for Dust Girl is definitely on Callie discovering who she is and the journey that she's just setting out on. That's right, this is a part of a trilogy and I'm definitely looking forward to seeing where the next book will take Callie!

Having said all of that, Dust Girl was a wonderfully unique read and did I mention that it's set in the mid-1930's? Or that Callie is half black during a time period where segregation was rampant? This is definitely a book to pick up if you're looking for a unique faerie related read!
